COMMENTARY:
Overall a pretty good year for albums in 2001. Some albums would have
appeared higher on the year end spectrum had they been released a little
earlier in the year (however this always happens to 2 or 3 good albums
every year, i.e. Song Cinema, Declaration,
Glorify Edify Testify, Worship, Satellite,
etc.).
I was a little shocked when the totals came through and
saw Elementary make it all the way up to #2. Sure, I was
expecting it to be Top 10, but NOT that high, very awesome. It is also
very cool to see Stronger, Have I Ever Told You,
Destiny, and Big Blue Sky (the true shocker)
claim spots in the Top 10. Freedom was a given, along
with Oxygen. I was a little shocked to see Free
to Fly place so high. I would easily call it the most disappointing
album of 2001.
Shaun Groves manages to claim the highest album by a new artist,
which is no big shocker. Tree63 was the only other new artist
to claim the #1 spot this year, but their album was very pitiful compared
to Groves', IMHO. However, it was very cool to see By the Tree
and Paige do fairly well. They are easily two of the more underrated
new artists this year.
For all you tobyMac, Jennifer Knapp, Audio Adrenaline, Paul Alan and ZOEgirl fans out there, have no fear, their albums will surely be in next years Top 50, as I just received them and didn't have enough time behind them to claims spots this year.
HOW ARE YEAR END CHARTS
COMPILED?
The year end charts are compiled by a true mathematical formula. It's
really not that confusing, but I like to make it look like I am smarter
than I am. Every week, the Top 25 Albums are given a numerical point
value in inverse order, in other words, if an album ranks #1 for the
week, it receives 25 points, #2 receives 24 points, #3 receives 23 points,
etc. all the way down to #25, which receives 1 point for the week. At
the end of the year, I add up all the points, and the albums with the
most points make up the Top 50 for the year.
However, I do give my albums bonuses. If an album goes #1, it recieves 15 bonus points. This is my way of rewarding an album for going #1, which not every album does. So if an album goes #1 for 2 weeks, it receives 30 extra points, etc. So in actuality, a #1 album actually gets 40 points instead of only 25. So since Elementary claimed 4 weeks at #1, it claimed 60 bonus points, in addition to the points which it incurred during its stay on the chart.
