COMMENTARY:
I think I am pretty satisifed at how the year end singles chart worked out. Some songs I wish had ranked higher, others I was shocked at how high they ranked. Overall, I am very pleased.

I think Jaci's "Every Time I Fall" (#6) is the biggest shocker of the year. I never expected it to do as well as it did. But, there's nothing I can do about it. Avalon's "Make It Last Forever" (#8) was also a big shocker, however much more pleasant than Jaci's. I was shocked that "The Glory" (#26) didn't rank in the Top 10. "Live Out Loud" (#11) barely misses the Top 10, while "Good Thing" (#10) barely makes it.

Sleeper Hits (songs that weren't singles yet still impacted the chart) did fairly well this year. The biggest Sleeper this year was Ginny Owens' "Own Me" (#3), which totally dominated the chart in the early part of the year. I was very pleased to see it take #3 for the year. "An Audience of One" (#17), "I Love You" (#22), and "Small Enough" (#35) were also Sleeper Hits that faired well on the year end spectrum (all of which went #1 in the process of the year). The biggest Sleeper not to go #1 was Smitty's "The Giving" (#56) from Freedom. This was The Top 50 Countdown's first (and only) instrumental song to break into the Top 10. The biggest Sleeper to not hit the Top 30 was FFH's "We Sing Alleluia" (#139) which peaked at #31 and spent an impressive 15 weeks on the chart.

This was definetly not the year of the new artist. Shaun Groves was easily the most impressive with the #1 song of the year ("Welcome Home") and the longest running #1 and longest running song of the year this year (not to mention breaking the record to become the longest running song ever). After Groves, however, there wasn't much to talk about. Sara Groves (#41) claimed a Top 5 hit ("The Word"), and Matt Brouwer (#72) and The Elms (#76) both claimed Top 10 hits ("A New Song" and "Hey Hey" respectively), however, all the other singles by new artists seemed to not have very impressive lives on the chart.

The biggest artists were that of Jaci Velasquez (4 #1's), FFH (1 #1), and Cindy Morgan (3 #1's) who all managed to rack up 5 singles in the Top 150. Avalon (3 #1's), Stacie Orrico (2 #1's), Rachael Lampa (4 #1's), Mark Schultz (3 #1's), Natalie Grant (3 #1's), Steven Curtis Chapman (1 #1) and Third Day all made their mark with 4 singles apeice within the Top 150.

There were 40 #1 songs this year, a record indeed.

HOW ARE YEAR END CHARTS COMPILED?
The year end charts are compiled by a true mathematical formula. It's really not that confusing, but I like to make it look like I am smarter than I am. Every week, the Top 50 Songs are given a numerical point value in inverse order, in other words, if a song ranks #1 for the week, it receives 50 points, #2 receives 49 points, #3 receives 48 points, etc. all the way down to #50, which receives 1 point for the week. At the end of the year, I add up all the points, and the songs with the most points make up the Top 150 for the year.

However, I do give some songs bonuses. If a song goes #1, it recieves 15 bonus points. This is my way of rewarding a song for going #1, which not every song does. So if a song goes #1 for 2 weeks, it receives 30 extra points, etc. So in actuality, a #1 song actually gets 65 points instead of only 50. So since "Welcome Home" claimed 4 weeks at #1, it claimed 60 bonus points, in addition to the points which it incurred during its stay on the chart.
